Close to a year after the launch of Centre’s much publicised Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), thousands of BPL families in Karnataka are still depending on kerosene and firewood for cooking. Even though 80,000 people across the State have given up their LPG subsidy to help BPL families get benefits of the PMUY; even though Karnataka is the only State that has voluntarily come forward to improve the scheme by sharing the cost; even though the Karnataka Government has submitted several memorandums to the Centre on implementing the Scheme – the Central Government continues to dole out its indifferent step-motherly treatment to the Congress ruled state.
As per PMUY, beneficiaries have to purchase stove, lighter and pipe as the scheme provides just the connection with a LPG cylinder. But Namma Sarkara in Karnataka, without the petty political mindset, has upped the ante and decided to improve the Centre’s scheme by providing the second cylinder, a double-burner stove and other materials free of cost.
Centre’s politics are of slumber on significant policy issues affecting Karnataka, and heightened manipulation of Central agencies to hurt Karnataka’s image politically. It’s time the PM wakes up to his adage of Sabka Vikas. The people of the state will remember this, PM Modi. Your politics versus our progress. We will decide.
