The Union has finally intervened on the Cauvery issue, and to what end? Well, from publicity in the media for Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti, to complete inaction, the Union’s intervention on the Cauvery issue is disappointing.
At the meeting convened by Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti, Tamil Nadu refused to accept Karnataka’s proposal that an expert committee be sent to the river basin to assess water availability. What is Tamil Nadu afraid of? Even more disappointing is the Union Minister’s response, “Now things are again before the Honourable Supreme Court,”
Apart from stating the obvious and smiling for the shutter bugs, there is very little this meeting has actually achieved. While Karnataka Chief Secretary Arvind Jadhav underlined the need for a Central expert committee’s visit to the basin area to study “ground realities”, Tamil Nadu’s refusal and the Union’s lack of will has kept the situation in a stalemate.
