Be damned if you do, be damned if you don’t

The past few days we have seen the national and the local media lament over the loss caused by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) demolition drive, targeting encroachments on lake beds and Storm Water Drains (SWDs). But there are a few facts which have been kept out of the biased and mostly negative reporting about the demolition drive:

1.       The BBMP officials have tried to regularize structures in the city by identifying nearly 1,923 encroachments, some of which had already been removed in earlier drives

2.      BBMP officials had been marking structures and boundary walls which have encroached on the SWDs and had given the residents two days’ time to remove the encroachments themselves

3.      Only the encroached sections have been demolished, that too after issuing warnings

4.      Encroachments on lake beds and SWDs have been the cause of heavy flooding in the city, and if left unchecked, can go on to cause serious trouble for the residents of the city
