On one hand, where the Supreme Court is trying to make all-encompassing pro- farmer reforms, one after the other, the BJP’s policy on farmers is nothing more than one big face palm. The BJP backed Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act allows banks to auction farmers’ property for loan recovery! While cronies and willful defaulters get away with restructured loans, poor farmers continue to suffer an apathetic BJP government.
Earlier in the year, the Supreme Court had directed the drought-hit states to distribute food grains to the affected families of the suffering farmers. As a response to the rap on the knuckles, the centre was forced to distribute extra food grains to even non-ration card holders. But the BJP ruled government’s intention, despite its sweet-talk on Krishi Kalyan or farmers welfare, seems to have become clear in the wake of its support to SARFAESI. The SARFAESI is an obnoxious piece of legislation, making the alienation of farmer’s land a means of recovering loan money.
Contrary to the this law, Supreme Court had set aside the judgment of the Punjab and Haryana High Court recently, which had ordered the eviction of a farmer after expiry of the lease period of the land, making it clear that farmers can’t be evicted from leased land, even after expiry period. Taking a cue from this Supreme Court judgment, the BJP better start delivering on its promise of farmer’s welfare, or wait for another damning indictment by the Supreme Court!
